Freshman Academy

Four years of college can be a period of tremendous growth–but only if used well. Increased independence requires an intentional approach to academics, extracurriculars, and social life. Through seminars and personal mentoring, the Windmoor Freshman Academy helps young men make choices that lead to serious learning, setting professional directions, forging great friendships, finding one’s spouse or vocation, and more. In the Academy, students are equipped to make the most of life in college and beyond.

mentoring

A person needs a mentor, especially when he does something for the first time. Before college, we all had mentors: parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, etc. They were paying attention to us and holding us accountable, often without our realizing it. For the first time in his life, a freshman in college finds himself without a dedicated mentor. The Freshman Academy has a group of experienced mentors—people who have gone through college recently, done it well, and have practical advice—who can help new students to continue to mature and make the most of college. These meetings typically occur weekly or biweekly and help to personalize the main ideas of the talks.

“My experience with the freshman academy was truly valuable. Not only did I meet many great friends but I also learned many useful skills from experienced faculty, particularly how to study fast and effectively.”
